It is possible to volunteer at the Dhital Health Post. We are final year medical students from Australia and were able to spend one week helping out at the health post. It was a great opportunity to find out about how illness affects the lives of local village residents, and to engage with them.
Volunteering at this health post would be suitable for final year medical students or qualified doctors as participants must be confident in clinical decision making, and managing common presentations with limited resources. Nurses may also be of assistance. The language barrier was an obstacle, although the medical staff did their best to translate, a short language course would be very helpful before your stay. Bring a phrase book!
We stayed at Annapurna Eco-Village and had a scenic, relaxing, 40 minute walk to and from the health post each day.
The health post is always in need of new supplies to feel free to bring any items ranging from gloves to medication. Contact the Amrit treks and expedition staff for more information. Or contact us and we can try to answer some questions about our experience.
